Mokoia Island provides an excellent example of partnership conservation in New Zealand. Restoration and protection of Mokoia Island is headed by the Mokoia Island Trust Board while the Department of Conservation provides technical advice and practical support towards the achievement of these goals.
Mokoia Island Management Strategy
“The goal of the Mokoia Island Management Strategy is to restore the ecology of the island, using the best available knowledge and expertise, so that it’s the most intact and functional island habitat in NZ.
We also want it to be able to provide a secure home for populations of threatened and endangered wildlife and plants, including customary medicinal flora. In this way it will be recognised as the best example of partnership conservation in NZ, where people and conservation are an integrated part of the island and its future”.
The Chairman of the Mokoia Island Trust Board, Selwyn Bennett
